Berkshire College of Agriculture, Further education college and zoo near Maidenhead, England
Berkshire College of Agriculture is a land-based further education college near Maidenhead, in the county of Berkshire, England. Its grounds include farmland, teaching buildings, and a zoo that forms part of the hands-on training offered to students.
The college was founded in 1949 to train agricultural workers across the Berkshire region. Over the following decades it gradually added animal care and zoo management to its programs, broadening the range of land-based skills it could teach.
The college has a small zoo on site, looked after by students training in animal care. Visitors can see how learning happens right among the animals, giving the place a hands-on feel that sets it apart from a traditional campus.
The site covers a large area of farmland, so it helps to wear comfortable shoes and allow plenty of time to move between areas. It is reachable by public transport, and parking is available on site for those arriving by car.
The college now offers training in heat pump installation and electric vehicle maintenance, skills that have little to do with farming in the traditional sense. This shift shows how a college rooted in agriculture can move into entirely new areas of practical work.
